For Episode 16 of Belonging: Gender, Sex & Spirituality, we’re joined by Professor Adriaan van Klinken — a scholar whose work sits directly at the intersection of religion, gender, sexuality and social justice. Adriaan is Professor of Religion and African Studies at the University of Leeds, where his research explores the complex ways religion — particularly Christianity — intersects with gender, sexuality and public life in contemporary Africa. His work engages with questions of masculinity, LGBTQ+ experiences, queer identities, religious communities and the ways faith can both reinforce social norms and become a resource for resistance, transformation and human flourishing. But this conversation goes beyond academia. At the heart of Adriaan’s work is a question that feels deeply connected to what Belonging is all about: Who gets to belong — and what happens when our understanding of gender, sexuality, faith and identity challenges the boundaries we have inherited? With a perspective shaped by religious studies, African studies, feminist, postcolonial and queer approaches, Adriaan brings a nuanced voice to some of the most complex questions surrounding who we are, how we love, what we believe, and where we find belonging. This is a conversation about faith, identity, difference, sexuality and the spaces where they collide — but also about the possibility of creating something more inclusive, compassionate and liberating.
